Career start at Sat.1 Frühstücksfernsehen

It had been clear to Dominik Schwaegerl that he would like to work in the media industry one day, even before his bachelor's degree in Journalism and Corporate Communications. Today he is an editor & on-air reporter on the morning show and especially appreciates the diversity of tasks and the contact with people.

After his traineeship, Dominik Schwaegerl was able to start directly at Sat.1 Frühstücksfernsehen.

What comes to mind when you think about your studies at Media University?

Media University is a practice-oriented university with cool projects and dedicated professors/lecturers.

You acquired a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Corporate Communications at Media University Berlin. What is your current job position?

After my studies at Media University I did a traineeship in the central editorial office of Sat.1 Frühstücksfernsehen. For two years now I have been trained and work as editor & on-air reporter in the Morning Show.

Did you get any further work experiences prior to your current position that you would like to share with us?

Before I started my studies, I had already completed several internships in the media sector and gained professional experience. Among others I worked for the news agency Reuters, the regional channel Sat.1 Bayern and the Austrian channel Life Radio. My last internship before starting my studies was in the central editorial office of Sat.1 Frühstücksfernsehen. There I worked as a managing editor and editorial assistant for the entire duration of my studies. In addition, I also worked occasionally as a recording manager of the show.

When did you figure out your preferred career path? How much was your choice influenced by the compulsory internship?

I already knew before my studies that I wanted to work in the media sector. So I decided to study Journalism and Corporate Communications.

Why did you decide to study “Journalism and Corporate Communications”? And what made you choose Media University Berlin?

I decided to study at Media University because I was attracted by the practice-oriented curriculum with its many projects. A purely theoretical course of study was not an option for me, because in my opinion it does not really train you for the professional world.

Which contents of your studies are part of your current job? How do your studies help you in your work routine?

The VJ course in the TV journalism module has been a huge boost to my everyday work.

What are your plans for the future?

In the future I would like to work in a leading position in the editorial department of Sat.1 Frühstücksfernsehen.

What do you like most about your current job position? What is your biggest challenge?

I really appreciate the fact that my job is versatile, that I am often on the road and get to know many people.

Could you tell us more about the application phase after your graduation?

Students should use the time to gain work experience in their field of interest during their studies. There is nothing better than having a foot in the door of a company already during the years of study.

Which characteristics should students have that want to study „B.A. Journalism and Corporate Communications“?

Students in the program B.A. Journalism and Corporate Communications should be self-confident, disciplined and above all creative people. They must be able to work well in a team and need a good time management.

Thank you very much for the interview, Mr Schwaegerl. We wish you continued success and pleasure in your work.
